The most important part of your sailing education is knowing what to do when things go wrong, to protect yourself, your crew, and your vessel. One bad situation can result in a domino effect of trouble that increases exponentially. Our goal is to expose students to potential problems and possible solutions, to become more experienced and safer sailors. While there is no absolute “right way” to handle an emergency at sea, understanding safety fundamentals will give you some exposure to possible actions and solutions. There’s a saying about failing to plan is planning to fail. If you have an idea of what is possible on your vessel, your successful containment or diffusion of a difficult solution is more probable. The USCG requires certain safety equipment on a boat and American Sailing has clearly defined an extended list of safety essentials that every prudent boater should be equipped with when taking to the water. Sailing is fun. A seemingly overwhelming amount of safety talk shouldn’t deter you from your sailing dreams. Understanding how to be prepared, take action, and safely know your way around a boat, makes everyone's time on the water much more enjoyable.
