WHY ARE BOATING RULES & NAVIGATION AIDS IMPORTANT?

AVOIDING COLLISIONS
These rules prevent collisions and accidents on the water. They provide a standardized set of guidelines on how to operate boats safely, including right-of-way, safe speeds, and maintaining proper lookout.

SAFE NAVIGATION
Buoys, lights, and markers provide essential information about the location of hazards, safe channels, and water depths. Understanding these aids ensures safe passage. In cases of low visibility, such as fog, heavy rain, or at night, ATONs become even more critical. They can also provide guidance when GPS or electronic navigation systems fail.

Responsibility and Liability
Failing to follow these regulations can result in fines, penalties, or legal action, especially in the event of an accident. Adherence to the rules can demonstrate that a boater acted responsibly which can be important in legal proceedings to determine liability.
